Over the Shoulder

October 22nd, 2012 at 06:24 pm

You might want to look away, guys, as this post is all about bras.

Or you might want to stick around for that reason, but unless you wear bras (hey, no judgement here, do whatever you gotta do), it might not be that fun, as we're going to be talking about BUYING bras.

As every woman knows, a well fitting bra is worth its weight in gold.

And for those of us who are a bit more...er..gifted in that area, the COST of a well fitting bra is way more than it's weight in gold.

I went to Victoria's Secret this weekend to get fitted, as my current bras have been fitting a little funny. I'm of the belief that EVERY woman should get properly fitted for bras - some department stores do it, just ask, and both Lane Bryant and Victoria's Secret do it. It's fast and easy and FREE and will save you tons of uncomfortable moments of having to readjust your boobs in public. Not that I would ever do that. Ahem.

I'm up another cup size (WHY? FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE, THEY ARE BIG ENOUGH), so new bras had to be bought.

Now, before people point out to me that you can get bras MUCH cheaper than Victoria's Secret, I know that. I spent two hours in four different department stores and Target a few years ago, tried on every single style of bra in my size as I could, decided on two, took them home, and then discovered they just didn't give me the support needed for all day. Vicky's is EXPENSIVE, but give me support and comfort. Like I said, worth its weight in gold.

2 bras? Ninety seven bucks, kids. NINETY SEVEN DOLLARS.

At least they gave me a free pair of panties.

Agreed, bras need to be correctly fitted. Even more expensive at Lingerie shops here but ahhh the girls stay where the need to be. I feel shoes also need to fit correctly or you subject yourself to bunions and other nasty foot problems

YES! I go to Macy's now; it's closer to work & home than Vicky's and they tend to have deals. I just did this last Saturday, and the slight awkwardness of having an older woman (as they always seem to be at Macy's; at Vicky's they always seem younger, huh?) fiddling with a tape measure on my lady parts is SO worth the comfort and fit I get for months afterward. I lucked out and got 2 bras (Maidenform & Warner, both good brands) for $43 total!

I get mine at Lane Bryant, where they are about $50 each, unless you happen to hit a buy one get one half off sale. But they last for years, which is more than I can say for department store bras.

I generally get mine at Lane Bryant's because it is hard to find my size most places (esp. department stores!) This summer I bought 4 for $100 thanks to their buy 2 get 1 free sale.

If it makes you feel any better I would be thrilled if my wife could pay $97 for two. My wife's bra's are custom made and cost a little over $100 each. Yup you read that right Each. She makes them last as long as possible. But I always hate the conversation that starts with "Honey I need to get new bras"

One of my least favorite things to do. They are always so uncomfortable at first...just about the time they feel right, they are worn out. I definately postpone this chore to the very last minute.

Those of you who can wear Bali and Vanity Fair and even 18 Hour? I AM JEALOUS. Wow, wolfy! $100 EACH?! Your poor wife - I can't even imagine the hassle and irritation of having to get my bras custom made.

I can't wear Lane Bryant bras either - I'm almost too big for Vicky's, but my band size is too small for Lane Bryant - and then they fall off my shoulders!

One tip Vicky's did give me - don't turn the cups inside out, hand or gentle wash, and DO NOT DRY (not that I dry my bras or panties anyway), and your bras will last a lot longer!

Alianora, what is it about Bali and Vanity Fair? Can't say I know all about bra brands, but they do come in all sizes. Are they known for something in particular?

I buy from VS too. Thankfully, it's not something you have to buy all the time. I usually ask for gift cards to VS at birthday or Christmas so it's not so bad then. Smile
